Something Like Waiting and a Shout
A portrait of Vincent and a self-portrait of the author as a middle-aged man.
Vincent van Gogh was a devout follower of Jesus Christ. Raised in an authoritarian, Dutch parsonage, he wrestled with painting “graven images.” In the deeply Catholic south of France, he found creative ways to transform the profane into the sacred.
This novella follows some of my journeys into Vincent's Symbolist art.
In addition to the art and life of Vincent van Gogh, two of my greatest passions remain gastronomy and poetry.
Plaits is a hybrid of the two. Recipes for a seven course meal are plaited with a crown of sonnets; a series of letters written between two lovers, ending in an omniscient coda.
The crown took ten years to complete, the recipes, exploring the cuisines of the cultures the lovers encounter, not so much. I find creating new dishes simple and relaxing.
I hope you enjoy this feast for all the senses and share the recipes with those closest to you.
